I was aware of his military aviation books, but had not been aware of his busting the myth of LBJ's "mission" during the war. . . which I was not aware was a myth! Henry never related that particular story to me.

His later work returning WW2 era Soviet decorations to the relevant surviving family members, and his assistance to the two women trying to trace the wreckage of their relative's aircraft in New Guinea, if I recall correctly, were ultimately what impressed me most. But that was his attention to the human side of military history shining through. His expeditions to Mongolia tracing the ruins of the 1939 Russo-Japanese conflict were also amusing, reminding me of Paul Theroux's railroad travelogues.

I last saw Henry in 2014, but continued to communicate with him by email quite frequently. He was irascible and eccentric as hell, and I miss him. Thanks for this write up. I can tell you knew him well, and that unique spirit of his shines through.Ed Behanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02990299319191133504noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-255017417572891099.post-47824311200565306952020-08-02T22:57:05.010-07:002020-08-02T22:57:05.010-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Ed Behanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02990299319191133504noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-255017417572891099.post-44621252290133512862018-08-30T17:20:25.889-07:002018-08-30T17:20:25.889-07:00Thank-you, Mr. Tillman, for telling about your mem...Thank-you, Mr. Tillman, for telling about your memories of Henry. We exchanged info re my Uncle, Lt. Robert Copeland, and the Japanese Pilot that rammed his B-29, Capt. Ogata.
Henry's contacts and Mr. Takaki were most helpful in getting the story factually.
A wonderful post on your part.
Bill Copeland
Whitney, TexasUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02476037264962835445noreply@blogger.com
